How Nevada alimony works

Purely discretionary — no statutory formula. Courts may use unofficial guidelines such as the '1-for-3 rule' (approximately one year of alimony for every three years of marriage) or a range of 20-40% of the income gap. The 'Tonopah Formula' is also mentioned as an unofficial guideline. Key factors: Financial condition of each spouse, nature and value of respective property, contribution of each spouse to property, duration of marriage, income, earning capacity, age and health of each spouse, standard of living during marriage, career before marriage of recipient spouse, specialized education/training/marketable skills attained during marriage, contribution as homemaker, property award in divorce, physical and mental condition of each party Duration: Generally discretionary. Unofficial guidelines include the '1-for-3 rule' (one year of alimony for every three years of marriage) and half the length of marriage for marriages from 3 to 20 years. Long-term alimony is generally reserved for marriages lasting a decade or longer.
