How Hawaii alimony works

Purely discretionary — no formula Key factors: Financial resources of the parties, ability of the spouse seeking alimony to meet needs, length of the marriage, standard of living during the marriage, ages of the parties, physical and emotional condition of the parties, job/occupation of the parties during the marriage, skills and employability of the spouse seeking alimony, needs of the parties, child custody and child support responsibilities of each party, ability of non-alimony seeking party to meet own needs, other factors measuring financial condition after divorce, probable length of time of alimony need, earning potential of both spouses, contributions to the marriage, separate and marital property, debts, time to be trained/find job for unemployed spouse Duration: Determined on a case-by-case basis; no rigid formula. For shorter marriages, rehabilitative alimony might last a few years. For longer marriages, permanent or reimbursement alimony could last significantly longer, sometimes until remarriage or death. One commonly used standard is one year of alimony for every three years of marriage.
