How Arizona alimony works

Amount is calculated as a percentage of the difference between the spouses’ monthly incomes, typically ranging between 15 and 25 percent of the income differential, with the percentage increasing with the length of the marriage. The formula produces a presumptive range, not a fixed result, and courts can adjust based on specific circumstances. For 2023, adjustment started at $100,000 household income, adding 1% for every $2,500 above that, capped at +80%. For 2025, adjustment doesn't start until $175,000, adds more slowly, and caps at +70%. Key factors: Lacking sufficient property to provide for reasonable needs, inability to be self-sufficient through employment, career contribution to other spouse’s educational or professional development, out of workforce due to childcare/domestic responsibilities, condition limiting ability to earn sufficient income, standard of living during marriage, receiving spouse’s employability challenges, documented career sacrifices, age, health, financial resources of both parties Duration: Duration is calculated based on the length of the marriage. The formula provides a range of years, expressed as a percentage of the marriage length. For example, a 10-year marriage might produce a presumptive maintenance term of 3 to 5 years. Longer marriages with greater income disparities or significant career interruptions produce longer presumptive terms. For marriages over 16 years, support can now run up to 12 years under 2025 guidelines.
